PROPERTY DESCRIPTION

Castle For Sale Under The Tuscan Sun Cortona Arezzo Tuscany Needing Restoration But Suitable Many Uses

It is a great honour to represent  this property for sale. The historical Rocca di Pierle, a unique castle gem nestled among Tuscan and Umbrian green rolling hills.

History

This fortification is considered one of the most important  examples of feudal castle.
The castle was constructed on the ruins of an existent one, which existed since 1098.
The oldest one belonged to the Marchesi of Santa Maria who submitted to Cortona in 1202, 1217 and again in 1225, when the Oddi from Perugia alternated in the possession of this manor with the Marchesi of Santa Maria and Cortona.
The Casali, landlords of Cortona, had it from 1236 to 1371, when Francesco Casali constructed the second castle.
In Cortona since 1325, the Casali family governed the town without being accepted by it inhabitants.
The Casali had the name of “imperial vicars”, but mainly exercised the power on their advantage.
The 11 August 1369 the farmers did rebel and attacked the palace that the Casali had in Mercatale.
Probably for this reason the Oddi decided to part with some belongings that they had in the valley and sold this castle and that of Lisciano to Francesco Casali, who, after have gained possession of the entire valley, decided not to have any other risks and reconstructed the Rocca.
The layout of the new castle was drawn by Francesco’s son, Ranieri, who had some experience of military architecture, as he was one of Rodi’s knight.
There are not many battles happened in this area, except a bloodshed in 1387 by Uguccio Casali, who killed here 60 conjured.
The castle passed into the hands of the Florentine Republic, who bought it from Ladislao, the king of Naples.
In 1576 the Granduke of Tuscany Francesco de Medici broke through it to avoid the wrongdoers nestled right in this valley.
It is for this reason that the castle has been brought to us as a ruin.
Don Bruno Frescucci describes the castle as follows:
The chalky walls carved with hammer and the corners are refined with chisel.

Layout description

Rocca di Pierle is the main construction of a small hamlet, where almost all the buildings are realized with the same material and do create a very impressive scene.
The layout is irregular and has been smoothed on the angles.
The entrance used to be on the northern side from the tower, protected from the wall, the gate and the drawbridge’s door.

The boundary walls are in good condition and 220 metres long . The palaces is 28 metres high. There used to be two towers, but now there is just one. The other has been demolished in the past century and the material was used to pave the road to Cortona.

There are still visible two towers, gatekeeper’s lodge, the groove of drawbridge, the rainwater course and the windows designed as loopholes.
The building had seven floors: the first, the third and fifth with big vaulted ceilings and the other four levels with wooden ceiling. The cellar had high ceilings and in the tower there was a well with iron stings used to let wretched people die.

There is a walking path all around the castle, which allows you to admie the entire valley with a 360 ° view leading to the drawbridge, which is placed on the north-east part of the property.
This last one used to be the only access to the rocca in the past centuries and, being located in the steep side of the mountain, made it quite difficult to capture the castle by the army that contended this jewel of medieval architecture.
